What are Canada study permit requirements?

Answer: To study in Canada you generally need a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution, proof you can pay tuition and living costs, identity documents, and a study permit application that satisfies IRCC (including biometrics). Some intakes also need a provincial attestation letter (PAL) — rules change, so verify on IRCC before you pay agents.

Core requirements (typical)

Acceptance from a DLI (program and conditions clear)
Proof of funds (tuition + living; GIC often used by students from Pakistan)
Valid passport and photos
Immigration medical exam if required for your case
SOP / study plan that matches the program
Biometrics and online IRCC application
PAL / other provincial letters when IRCC requires them for your intake

Funds — what officers look for

Enough money for first-year tuition and living costs, with a believable source. Sudden large deposits without explanation are a classic refusal pattern. See proof of funds.

Credibility and refusals

Program that does not match your academics/work history
Weak ties / unclear return or career logic
Incomplete forms or missing PAL when required
Using unlicensed “guaranteed visa” agents

If refused: what to do next.

Study permit vs TRV sticker

Many Pakistani students need both a study permit decision and a temporary resident visa / travel document to enter — follow the exact IRCC instructions in your approval letter. Do not book non-refundable flights until documents are clear.

Working while studying

On-campus / off-campus work rights depend on your permit conditions and current IRCC rules. Never assume unlimited work hours. Violations can destroy PGWP eligibility later.

Language tests and school conditions

IELTS/PTE/TOEFL requirements come from the school and sometimes from IRCC program rules. Meet the higher of the two bars. Conditional offers that depend on language must be cleared before you rely on them for a permit strategy.

Keep tuition payment receipts aligned with the acceptance letter amounts. Mismatched figures without explanation create procedural delays.

Biometrics and medical timing

Complete biometrics promptly after IRCC instructs you — delays can push start dates. Medical exams, when required, should be from IRCC-approved clinicians. Keep receipts and information sheets with your file for port-of-entry questions.
